How do solar panels work?

The sun is our most abundant energy source. Solar panels capture the energy from the sun allowing your home to use that energy as electricity.

Solar panels are made up of many small photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells convert sunlight into electricity. When the sunlight hits a solar panel the energy produced is a direct current (DC). Since your home operates on alternating current (AC), the solar panels transfer the DC energy through wires to an inverter which creates the necessary AC energy to power your home.
